Gutom na si Mang Cesar!” was a comical quip that the Saturday Group of Artists would use to clock their weekend sketching sessions. These informal Saturday afternoon meet-ups began in the late 60s at the now defunct Taza de Oro in the Ermita district. Variably done over ice cream sundaes and later on full-blown meals, the gathering happened between several generations of full-time, would be, and student artists, writers as well as the merely curious. Like a potluck, people came to the Saturday Group for their own reasons: to brush up on the basics, to talk shop, or just for a change of scenery. Cesar Legaspi cautiously took on the mantle of the Saturday Group leadership when the more gregarious Hernando Ocampo passed.

As we pack up the brushes so to speak for the first Cesar Legaspi Centennial exhibit, Lying in State at the CCP, here’s Legaspi’s family’s way of saying: “patapos na po tayo rito ... hanggang sa susunod! Kita-kita naman sa UP (for A Man and His Relations, Bulwagan ng Dangal Museum) sa June 13! Now pass me that Tita Betty’s spaghetti.
