Originally a church, later a mosque, and now a museum, the Hagia Sophia was built in the 6th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great. Hagia Sophia was the religious symbol of two empires for 1338 years between 537 and 1928, (excluding the 57 years of Catholic conquest). Photo courtesy of Russavia.
