LINA LLAGUNO-CIANI’S “CHIMERA” AT ALTRO MONDO ARTE CONTEMPORANEA

Friday, October 03, 2014

Altro Mondo and Galleria Duemila proudly present Chimera, a solo show by Italy-based artist Lina Llaguno Ciani. Chimera is a suite of surrealist paintings, which depict charming and fantastical dream-like compositions.

Chimera takes its name from the Latin word chimaera, which pertains to a thing that is yearned or wished for but in fact is illusory or unreachable.

Ciani’s work is ripened with juxtapositions that thread the balance between breathtaking reveries and a child-like magnetism to existence. The images are delicately realized — a watermelon, an egg, and even the ancient nautilus afloat in space as astral bodies.

Her human subjects are dazed in blissful cosmological fantasies wherein atmospheres are rendered with commanding blues, a dazzling magenta, and a certain ochre. Ciani’s images give the spectator a rest from the mundane but most of all; they are laden with resilience and hope.

Ciani completed her BFA in University of the Philippines and continued further studies at the Accedemia delle Belle Arti in Perugia, Italy. She co-founded Graphix, a design studio in Rome and has had one-woman shows in New York, San Francisco, Washington, Rome, Milan, and Manila. Among other accolades, she was honored with the Pamana Presidential Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts in 2002.
