The AFM Cine Club presents: La Religieuse (The Nun) on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 8:30pm. Admission is free!

La Religieuse (English: The Nun) is a 2013 French drama film directed by Guillaume Nicloux and starring Pauline Étienne, Isabelle Huppert, Louise Bourgoin, Martina Gedeck, Françoise Lebrun, Agathe Bonitzer, Alice de Lencquesaing, Gilles Cohen, Marc Barbé, Garance Clavel, Fabrizio Rongione, François Négret, Lou Castel, Nicolas Jouhet, Pascal Bongard, Pierre Nisse, Jean-Yves Dupuis and Héloïse Jadoul. The film premiered in competition at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. It received two nominations at the 4th Magritte Awards, winning Best Actress for Pauline Étienne, and a nomination at the 39th César Awards.

In the film, a young Suzanne Simonin is forced by her parents to become a nun. She learns that as an illegitimate child she is supposed to atone for her mother’s sin. Her abbess treats her nicely but when she dies Suzanne considers breaking her vows...

Adapted from Denis Diderot’s eponymous novel, La Religieuse tells the story of a woman tries to resist imposed religious values, revealing the dehumanizing effect of cloistered life.

“Clarté, transparence et limpidité dominent cette ode à la liberté. Même lorsque la nuit survient, ce sont encore lanterne, chandelier, flambeau qui viennent éclairer les visages sans fard, épurés, en les caressant avec des couleurs chaudes. Tout tend vers la lumière, pour fuir l’obscurantisme.”

“Measured and sensible, The Nun lacks the full-on claustrophobic horror of a film like The Magdalene Sisters and moves through events at a matter-of-fact distance.”

The film, which is 1h52 minutes long, will be shown in its original version with English subtitles.

Film screenings are subject to changes without prior notice. Entrance is free but on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations.

Alliance Française de Manille is located at 209 Nicanor Garcia Street (formerly Reposo Street), Bel-Air 2, Makati City.
