Visual artist and musician Maan de Loyola opens her first solo exhibition of works at Kanto Artist-run Space, The Collective in Makati City. Titled Force/Farce, the show will open with an artist’s reception and performance on July 26, 2014, 7 p.m. and will run up to August 10, 2014.

The exhibition features a series of paintings which De Loyola started making in 2010. In this series, the artist explores various visual representations of social forces, pointing to the contradictions embodied in these arenas of power. De Loyola responds to traditionally-masculine images of the workforce and the armed forces, transforming these into a series of self-portraits and small objects.

Bordering on the iconic and surreal, the works merge both personal testimony and social commentary. Her representation of self and its subjectivities becomes an allegory for the body politic and sectors coexisting in society, reflecting on and gently disrupting portrayals of both labor and armed forces as monolithic and one-dimensional apparatuses, solely controlled from above.

An artist talk will be scheduled on Aug 10 at Kanto.

Maan de Loyola studied painting at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and has participated in over 20 exhibitions since 1991. Force/Farce is her first solo exhibition.

De Loyola is also a member of the Tutok Artists Initiative and Kababaihan sa Sining at Bagong Sibol na Kamalayan (Kasibulan), two organisations involved in the advocacy for human and women’s rights. She is also the guitarist for the band, earthfishfish.

Force/Farce runs up to August 10, 2014.

Kanto is located at The Collective, 7274 Malugay Street, Brgy. San Antonio Village, Makati City. The gallery is open from Wednesdays to Sundays, 2:00 - 10:00 p.m.
